About the Office of Student Life
The Office of Student Life (OSL), located in the Iowa Memorial Union, provides diverse social, cultural, recreational and educational programs and activities for The University of Iowa community. The OSL assists students and student organizations in designing, building, and maintaining educational environments that will enhance their personal growth and facilitate the attainment of their organizational purpose. Through its programs and services, the OSL is committed to assisting students in becoming a force for positive change in the community and the greater society.
Our Mission
The mission of the Office of Student Life is to provide educational, leadership, and social opportunities for the greater University community, with a primary focus on students. Our staff works with, through, and for students and student organizations, and in conjunction with other University and community partners, to enhance the holistic development of students and their academic and co-curricular experiences.
Graduate Practicum
The Office of Student Life (OSL) offers graduate students the opportunity to pursue a practicum in the areas of Student Development, Counseling, Ethnic/Cultural Studies, and Higher Education. Practicum students receive academic credit instead of a stipend. Practicum positions help the OSL fulfill its mission of providing students with practical work experience to facilitate the development of a professional identity in the field and to integrate theory and standards into practice. OSL staff assesses how practicum applicants want to enhance their career goals and matches them with an appropriate staff member to serve as their on-site supervisor. Throughout the practicum experience, students are expected to meet weekly or as appropriate with their site supervisor to discuss their experience. Periodic evaluations are required by the student academic program advisor to ensure development. Like Graduate Assistantship positions, practicum students receive valuable experience and discover new career paths. Practicum students are required by their program to provide 8 to 10 hours/week on site. Practicum experiences generally last the duration of one semester.
