About Us

Greg Bal, Supervising Attorney

Gregory Bal has been serving University of Iowa students at Student Legal Services since 2007. Earning his J.D. at Drake University Law School, Greg proceeded to serve as a defense attorney in United States Army JAG corps for seven years where he gained invaluable and extensive experience dealing with high profile criminal cases. Upon returning to Iowa, Greg served as a public defender for six years before his appointment as our Supervising Attorney. Additionally, he is currently a member of the American Association of Law Schools, the Clinical Legal Education Association, the National Association for Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Legal Aid Defenders Association, the Global Alliance For Justice Education, the Iowa Association for Justice, and the Iowa Bar Association. In his free time, Greg is an avid photographer and has received national and state recognition for his work including a selection by the New York Times for their photo collection Documenting the Decade.

Student Legal Services is staffed by a full-time, licensed, practicing attorney, a part-time, licensed practicing attorney, up to five legal interns, a full-time legal secretary, and two undergraduate student directors.
