How to Start a Student Organization

Step 1

Sign into OrgSync with your Hawk ID and password.  If you have not joined OrgSync, you will need to create an OrgSync Personal Profile.

Step 2

Once in OrgSync, click on the “Organizations” tab toward the top of the screen.  Then, Click on “Register New Organization.”  You will then need to click on “Center for Student Involvement & Leadership” and finally click “Submit Query.”

Step 3

Complete the New Organization Registration Form.  This form should take about 20 to 25 minutes to complete.  If you do not complete it, you will be able to return to the form by going to the "My Tools" section.  Then, click on "Requests," from there, click on the "Registrations" tab and it should appear. Please complete all fields on all five pages of the registration request.

Step 4

Remember to attach your constitution in the New Organization Registration Form.  Your organization’s constitution must include the UI Human Rights Clause in the membership section and it must include the mandatory Financial Clause regarding the reversion of state money and student activity fees.  These clauses can be found in the Constitutional Guidelines located here.

Step 5

Submit the New Organization Registration Form.

What’s Next?

Your request will now be sent to the Student Organization Review Committee (SORC).  The Committee meets the first and third Wednesday of each month.  If your organization poses health, safety, insurance, or liability concerns you will be asked to present to the Committee.  You will be contacted by staff from the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership to setup a time to meet with the Committee.  It may take 3 to 4 weeks to hear from the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership about the recognition status of your organization.

Not Approved:

International travel and the promotion of private business by student organizations will not be approved by the Student Organization Review Committee.  These two items are not comprehensive.  Other organzations may be denied for reasons not listed above.

New student organization requests will not be considered during the summer from May 16 through September 5, 2012.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the Center for Student Leadership and Involvement in advance at 319-335-3059.
