Leadership Development Conference

The Leadership Development Conference is an annual event coordinated by the Office of Student Life and the University of Iowa Student Government. The one-day conference strives to foster leadership development for all students. A variety of general sessions, the majority of which are student facilitated, are offered to provide students the opportunity to learn about numerous leadership topics. General session topics include, but are not limited to, running effective meetings, event planning, recruiting and retaining members, leadership styles and typology, team building, officer training, and time management.

Goals for the Conference:

  • Explore different approaches to leadership
  • Gain new leadership skills
  • Improve existing leadership skills
  • Network with other student leaders
  • Facilitate breakout sessions
  • Receive recognition for campus leadership

Dr. Craig Just -- Keynote Speaker for 2009


Craig Just: "Be a Good Leader - Play Guitar Hero"

Dr. Craig Just is an associate research scientist at IIHR - Hydroscience & Engineering at The University of Iowa. Dr. Just received aB.S. and M.A. in chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Ph.D. inenvironmental science from the University of Iowa. He excels at the interfaceof environmental analytical chemistry and applied engineering in researchprojects in the areas of: phytoremediation of explosives; water quality andcyberinfrastructure; fate determination of contaminants during wastewatertreatment; and poverty reduction and community building in countries such asGuatemala, Mexico and Haiti. Dr. Just is the coordinator of sustainability programsin the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa. In 2008, he won theUniversity's President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence. As aninstructor and faculty advisor, he works with students who aspire to addresshuman development issues in resource-poor nations, from a perspective ofsustainable engineering. He is the faculty advisor for the University of Iowachapters of Engineers for a Sustainable World and Engineers Without Borders.
