Helping UI Students
Student Legal Services is primarily funded by student government through the receipt of student activity fees. Therefore, only currently registered University of Iowa students are eligible for representation by Student Legal Services. All registered U of I students are able to stop in or call to set up a free legal advice-only appointments!
Flood Damage
If your rental unit has sustained damage due to the flood and you have signed a lease on a unit that is damaged, you have legal options. Please contact Student Legal Services at (319) 335-3276.
About Us
Student Legal Services is staffed by a full-time, licensed, practicing attorney, four legal interns, a full-time legal secretary, and an undergraduate student director. The legal interns are second and third year law students completing a clinical intership at Student Legal Services for one semester.
Our Services
Student Legal Services handles landlord-tenant disputes, consumer problems, return of deposits, criminal cases (misdemeanors only), alcohol offenses, OWI and traffic violations, unemployment claims, dissolutions of marriage, small claims actions, child custody, name changes, collections, contract actions, and power of attorney.
**Student Legal Services does not handle felonies or cases outside of Johnson County.**
