Welcome
UI TransWeek Starts Nov. 16
Hosted by The UI LGBT Resource Center and the GLBTAU
November 16th-20th, 2009
The University of Iowa's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC) and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allied Union (GLTBAU) are proud to present the first annual UI TransWeek. This week of educational workshops, film screenings, discussions, and celebration will end with a candlelight vigil on the Pentacrest and a celebration for trans-identified people, allies, and interested folk on November 20, 2009. The celebration will include a nationally recognized speaker, musical performances, spoken word artists, and personal narratives; revolving around the theme of remembering and celebrating trans-identified folk.
The events scheduled for TransWeek are an excellent opportunity for our academic and cultural community. Given the recent interest from the campus and community in learning more about trans-identities, the first annual UI TransWeek serves to provide education, spirited discussions, and celebration of those who have overcome institutional and micro-level trans-related barriers.

Additionally, we are proud to showcase Coyote Grace, a Seattle-based folk band comprised of Joe Stevens, a transman singer/songwriter, backed up by Ingrid Elizabeth on vocals and upright bass. The celebration will also include personal narratives from trans-identified people about their experiences living in Iowa City and poetry/spoken word performances. Finally, the candlelight vigil on Friday at 6pm on the UI Pentacrest (which precedes the Celebration) will provide an opportunity to reflect on those who have been hurt by gendered violence and stand in solidarity with trans-identified people and allies.
