The photographs featured in this room are from the UI Libraries Special Collections & University Archives. The performing and visual arts have enhanced the vibrancy of the University of Iowa and surrounding community for decades. The photos in this room showcase Iowa students expressing and participating in the arts through multiple mediums.

The arts are a centerpiece of UI culture. Over the years, Iowa has welcomed many accomplished artists including Mauricio Lasansky (graphic arts and printmaking faculty 1945-86) Margaret Walker (novelist & poet), Grant Wood (painting professor 1934-41), and Elizabeth Catlett, a sculpture artist and the first African-American woman to receive a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in 1940. As an avid civil rights activist, she later went on to become one of the most important American sculptors and printmakers of the 20th century.

The University of Iowa is home to the world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Over the years, its alumni have won a collective 18 Pulitzer Prizes, numerous National Book Awards, and other major literary honors. University colleges and departments, student organizations, and community groups have provided a variety of opportunities for students to display their talents to the UI community and beyond. Hancher Auditorium, Voxman Music Building, the Visual Arts Building, Halsey Hall, the UI Art Museum, and downtown Iowa City have served as the stage for aspiring student artists at the University of Iowa…past, present, and future.
