Leadership in the Outdoors (410:045) 3 credits: This course focuses on the academic study of leadership theories, concepts such as leadership styles, group dynamics, and followership, and their application to outdoor experiences. Students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and apply different leadership styles to various components of the class through experiential opportunities that may include, but are not limited to: teams courses, high challenge courses, indoor/outdoor rock climbing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and camping. In addition, an optional week-long backcountry experience will be provided, incorporating a “leader of the day” learning opportunity so students can apply what they have learned in the classroom. Students must be willing and able to participate in experiential activities and spend a fair amount of time outdoors (even during inclement weather).

Introduction to Leadership (413:050) 3 credits: The goal of this class is to provide an overview of the theory and skills necessary for effective leadership. This course is geared toward emerging student leaders and enrollment is restricted to first year and transfer students. This course will be offered in the Michigan Room (#351), Iowa Memorial Union.
