The Office of Student Life and the University of Iowa Student Government work together to coordinate the annual Hawkeye Student Organization Leadership and Service Awards Program (Hawkeye Awards).  The Hawkeye Awards Program recognizes the accomplishments of The University of Iowa’s student organizations, their leaders, and advisors.  The awards are presented during the lunch portion of the Student Leadership Development Conference.  Student organizations, student leaders, and student organization advisors will be recognized for the following accomplishments:

Outstanding Student Organization

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award your student organization should have been providing leadership and service to The University of Iowa between January 2007 and December 2007. The organization must be recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department.

Criteria: The successful organization for this award will have displayed significant effort and have made a meaningful contribution to The University of Iowa students, and/or the surrounding communities. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Demonstrated consistent flexibility, initiative, creativity, and perseverance.
  • Attracted members from different backgrounds, life experiences, and diverse perspectives.
  • Worked in collaboration with other organizations to enhance organization’s goals.
  • Exemplified integrity in all areas of the organization.
  • Developed a responsible transition plan for the continued success of the organization.
Please submit the following documents with the nomination form:

  • What has the student organization accomplished during the past year that demonstrates the above criteria?
  • What is the organization’s mission and how has the organization focused on it this year?
  • How has the internal operation of the organization improved this year?
  • What new programs and activities (or improved existing ones) has the organization created that have benefited the University community?
  • How has the organization intentionally collaborated with other student organizations or University departments?
  • What has the organization done to establish a plan to ensure continued organizational growth and sustainability of your organization in the future?

2) List: The organization’s activities/events and describe the organization’s overall impact on the greater University of Iowa community. Include examples of flyers and advertisements, if applicable.

3) Recommended: Please submit five pictures (on CD) showing the student organization in action. Please note: Pictures may be displayed during the Awards program presentation and be used for future marketing purposes.

All responses should be no more than 500 words.

Outstanding Student Organization Leader

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award the person must be an enrolled student providing leadership and service to the greater community through a student organization recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department. The student must have provided leadership and service between January 2007 and December 2007.

Criteria: The successful student for this award will have displayed significant effort for their Student Organization. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Displayed outstanding academic achievement, valued diversity, motivated and inspired others and exemplified integrity in both words and actions.
  • Provided exemplary service, commitment, and strong leadership to the University of Iowa community and demonstrated on-going flexibility, creativity, and perseverance in efforts.
  • Made a meaningful contribution to students, University, and surrounding communities while working with and for others (ex. Included other organizations/departments in planning and implementing events).
  • Was willing to address existing problems and valued feedback from others.
  • Made herself/himself available to group members and brought out strengths and talents of individual group members.
  • Demonstrated initiative by seeking ways to enrich the future.

Outstanding Program of the Year

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award the organization’s program/event must have occurred between January 2007 and December 2007. The sponsoring organization must be recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department. The program/event must have been student initiated, directed, and/or implemented. 

Criteria: The successful program/event for this award should have made a meaningful contribution to The University of Iowa students, and/or the surrounding communities. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Program enhanced the University community and institutional values of diversity, integrity, and initiative by utilizing a unique and creative approach.
  • Explored and fostered innovative and efficient ways of reaching and involving diverse student audiences.
  • This award will be presented to an organization that coordinated and managed a fiscally sound, well-planned program open to all UI students.

Outstanding Diversity Awareness Program

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award the organization’s program/event must have occurred between January 2007 and December 2007. The sponsoring organization must be recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department. The program/event must have been student initiated, directed, and/or implemented. 

Criteria: The successful program/event for this award should have focused on campus diversity or diversity issues, and encouraged acceptance and respect. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Program provided The University of Iowa community with an educational or entertaining program/event focused on diverse views, backgrounds, or experiences, or increased the awareness of diversity issues.
  • Program promoted and reflected the values of social justice, multiculturalism, and/or diversity. 
  • This award will be presented to an organization that coordinated and managed a fiscally sound, well-planned diversity awareness program open to all UI students.

  • What did the program/event accomplish during the past year that demonstrates the above criteria?

Outstanding Contribution to the Greater Community by a Student Organization

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award the organization’s program/event must have occurred between January 2007 and December 2007. The sponsoring organization must be recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department. The program/event must have been student initiated, directed, and/or implemented. 

Criteria: The successful program/event for this award should have made a meaningful contribution to The University of Iowa, and/or the surrounding communities. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Identified an existing problem and inspired and motivated others to act.
  • Committed to working with and for others.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and perseverance in seeking ways to challenge the present and enrich the future.
Please submit the following documents with the nomination form:

  • Please describe the organization’s program/event and provide reasons for the nomination.
  • What has the organization accomplished during the past year that demonstrates the above criteria?
  • How has the student organization made an impact on the community it serves?

The student must have provided leadership and service between January 2007 and December 2007.

Criteria: The successful student for this award will have displayed significant effort for the improvement of the greater community. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Displayed outstanding academic achievement, inspired and motivated others to act through service and exemplified integrity in all words and actions.
  • Provided exemplary service, commitment, and strong leadership to the greater University of Iowa community and was committed to working with and for others.
  • Made a meaningful contribution to students, The University of Iowa, and/or the surrounding communities through service.
  • Identified an existing problem and demonstrated initiative by seeking ways to address that problem through service.
  • Demonstrated on-going flexibility, creativity, and perseverance in efforts.

Outstanding Student Organization Advisor

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award the person must be a student organization advisor. The organization must be recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department. The advisor must have provided leadership and service between January 2007 and December 2007. The individual can be a UI faculty, staff, alumni, graduate student, or community member.

Criteria: The successful advisor for this award will have displayed significant effort for the improvement of the organization and therefore exhibited considerable progress in the development of the group. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Allowed students to take responsibility for their own learning and understanding of the organization while providing advice, encouragement, and support to all UI students.
  • Conveyed values of integrity and respect. Related well to individual students.
  • Made himself/herself available to others.
  • Was approachable and open to new ideas.
  • Valued initiative and student input.
  • Utilized different and creative approaches to educating and assisting members.
  • Served as a positive role model.
  • Helped organization reach its goals.

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award your student organization should have been providing leadership and service to The University of Iowa between January 2007 and December 2007. The organization must be recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department.

Criteria: The successful organization for this award will have displayed significant effort for the improvement of the organization and therefore exhibited considerable progress in the development of the group. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Revitalized membership (by improving recruitment and retention of new and diverse members)
  • Improved focus on the organization’s mission and internal operation
  • Creation of new programs and activities (or improved existing ones)
  • Intentional collaboration with other student organizations or University departments
  • And establishing a plan to ensure continued organizational growth and sustainability of the organization.

Most Promising New Student Organization

Eligibility: To be eligible for this award your student organization should have been founded and recognized any time during the 2007 calendar year and have been providing leadership and service to The University of Iowa anytime between January 2007 and December 2007. The organization must be recognized by The Partnership of the Student Governments of Iowa (PSGI), The Office of Student Life, The Department of Recreational Services or an Academic Department.

Criteria: The successful organization for this award will have demonstrated significant motivation, creativity, innovation, and perseverance. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Recruitment of a significant number of members
  • Creating new, interesting, and well-attended programs and events
  • Providing new opportunities for students to participate in the community
  • Collaborating with other student organizations or University departments
  • Establishing a plan to transition future leaders to ensure continued organizational growth.
Please submit the following documents with the nomination form:

  • What has the student organization accomplished during the past year that demonstrates the above criteria?
  • How have you recruited your membership this year and how many members do you have?
  • What is the organization’s mission and how have you focused on it during the development of your group?

Those interested in attending the Hawkeye Student Organization Leadership and Service Awards luncheon (who are not also registered to attend the 2008 Student Leadership Development Conference) must obtain a complimentary ticket from the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial.
