In October 2010, the Board of Regents and the State of Iowa approved the schematic design and budget for two projects at the Iowa Memorial Union. This two-part project includes flood mitigation and permanent recovery. The project will complete the recovery of damage to the facility resulting from the 2008 Flood and protect the IMU from future floods. Various University departments, consultants, Iowa Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have been working on this project since shortly after the flood.
Flood mitigation will involve flood walls around the IMU to protect it from future flood damage. The ground floor will be restored to pre-flood status with the return of the University Book Store, food court, bank, computer lab, student lounge and study spaces, and the Hawkeye Room.
Reoccupation of completed space may be phased. It is tentative that the projects will be completed in February 2015.
