About the project

The University of Iowa is investing in the future of the Iowa Memorial Union. Construction on the $81.4 million renovation began in 2025 and will continue through 2027, transforming approximately 120,000 square feet of this landmark campus space. The project addresses critical infrastructure needs while reimagining how the IMU can better support student success, belonging, and well-being for generations to come.

At the heart of the renovation is a new centralized student care hub that will bring student health, counseling, care, and wellness services together in one accessible location. As the first in the nation to locate this full spectrum of well-being services within a student union, Iowa is making care a visible, everyday part of campus life — a powerful step toward reducing stigma and helping more students seek support when they need it.

Updated meeting rooms, offices, and lounge areas will create more flexible spaces for collaboration, creativity, and connection. These improvements will strengthen the IMU’s role as a hub for student organizations, campus programs, signature events, and the informal interactions that shape campus life.

The renovation also extends beyond the building itself. Planned patios, public plazas, and stronger connections to Hubbard Park and the Iowa River will create a more welcoming and accessible environment for students, alumni, families, and visitors to gather.

The student care hub is scheduled to open in fall 2026, with full project completion expected in fall 2027. For the latest updates, visit imu.uiowa.edu/renovation.
