This room reflects the positive experience that over 4,000 international students per year bring to the University of Iowa. The entire campus community is enriched from the international students’ diverse backgrounds and cultural traditions. In this spirit, the room recognizes the contributions of international students by saying “welcome” in several languages.

An international student is defined by the University of Iowa as a student who is neither a U.S. citizen nor a permanent resident. International students travel to the University of Iowa from across the globe, with a majority enrolling from East and Southeast Asia. The program has grown significantly from its 1950 inception when only 179 international students were enrolled.
